What's In A Name?

Shakespeare wrote in his classic 'Romeo and Juliet', 

'What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.'

What does God Almighty think of names? Does He count them as being important, with any meaning at all?

In Genesis 5:3:32, the Bible (God's inspired word) gives a genealogy starting with Adam and going through Noah. Below is that list of names along with the Hebrew meaning of each respective name. Read this list and then you be the judge on the importance God gives to each of these names.

• Adam - Mankind
• Seth - is appointed to 
• Enos (Enosh) - a feeble, frail, mortality
  
• Cainan (Kenan) - in a fixed dwelling place
  
• Mahalalel - God who is praised
  
• Jared - comes down
  
• Enoch - to instruct
  
• Methuselah - as a man sent forth
  
• Lamech - to be beaten, smitten and tortured
  
• Noah - bringing rest, quiet place.
  

Placing all these Hebrew name definitions into one flowing sentence, it would read: 

'Mankind is appointed to a feeble, frail, mortality in a fixed dwelling place in which God, who is praised, comes down to instruct as a man sent forth to be beaten, smitten and tortured, bringing rest in a quite place.'

After reading this, do you think that God regards Shakespeare's opinion that a name isn't really that important? If you can't see that, you need to ditch those rose colored glasses and get some divine lasik surgery!
